The ripple effects from AirAsia's first disaster are spreading beyond the grieving families of the 162 people who died on Dec 28, as governments from Indonesia to India and Thailand take a harder look at budget travel and air safety.
The most contentious proposal is for regulated minimum airfares, which officials claim would ensure that airlines had sufficient funds to invest in safety.
Operators in the flourishing low-cost carrier (LCC) business have responded predictably. Price regulation, they say, would jeopardise the growth of affordable travel, threaten the vital tourism industry and hurt economies across Southeast Asia.
Indonesia, where AirAsia has been accused of flying on days and at times for which it lacked approval, was the first country to set a price floor for low-cost carriers operating in its domestic market. The Ministry of Transport declared that budget airfares must be no lower than 40% of what the full-service flag carrier Garuda Indonesia charges on a comparable route.
Ministry spokesman JA Barata said Transport Minister Ignatius Jonan signed the order on Dec 30 — two days after the AirAsia crash — and it would take effect once approved by the Justice and Human Rights Ministry.

The Sarasin family (Thai: สารสิน) refers to a wealthy assimilated Thai Chinese business clan that rose to prominence during the 19th century.
