Queen Latifah's childhood
Queen Latifah, then known as Dana Elaine Owens, was born on March 18 1970, in Newark, New Jersey. She was the daughter of a police officer and a schoolteacher. Her parents divorced she was 10 years old, and while she attended Catholic school, she was raised in the Baptist faith.
She found her stage name "Latifah", translating as "very kind" and delicate", aged eight, via a book of Arabic names.

She adopted the "Queen" part around the time of the launch of her rap career. She was in high school when she won a talent show with a group called Ladies Fresh.
In 1987, she gave her demo tape to DJ friend and by the following year had a record deal. The Tommy Boy label released her house, reggae and jazz-accented debut album, All Hail The Queen, in 1989. Hailed the "Aretha Franklin of rap", Latifah's reputation also rose in the acting world after her film debut in Spike Lee's 1991 work Jungle Fever. Dana Elaine Owens (born March 18, 1970), known professionally by her stage name Queen Latifah, is an American rapper, singer, and actress. She has received various accolades, including a Grammy Award, a Primetime Emmy Award, a Golden Globe Award, three Screen Actors Guild Awards, and two NAACP Image Awards, in addition to a nomination for an Academy Award. In 2006, she became the first hip hop artist to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
At age 19, Latifah released her debut album All Hail the Queen (1989), featuring the hit single "Ladies First". Her second album Nature of a Sista' (1991), was produced by Tommy Boy Records.
