Joyce Garbaciak is leaving the anchor desk for good at WISN-TV (Channel 12) in Milwaukee
Joyce Garbaciak, a fixture on the Milwaukee television news scene for 36 years, is leaving the anchor desk for good at WISN-TV (Channel 12). But she's not leaving the business completely.
The Milwaukee ABC affiliate announced Tuesday that Garbaciak, a reporter and anchor on Milwaukee TV since 1988, will leave her anchor job at the station at the end of May. She'll continue at Channel 12 as a "special projects" contributing correspondent and report on stories "in a limited capacity," the station said.
The news came seven months after Garbaciak decided to pull back from anchoring Channel 12's 10 p.m. newscast while continuing to co-anchor the station's 6 p.m. newscast. According to the station, her final 6 p.m. anchor shift will be May 31.
Garbaciak joined Channel 12 in 2006 as a contributing correspondent and became a news anchor in 2014. Before her time at Channel 12, she was a reporter and anchor at Milwaukee's WITI-TV (Channel 6) from 1988 to 2005. Before that, she worked at WSAW-TV in Wausau and WTVF-TV in Nashville, Tennessee.
Channel 12 said it planned to announce Garbaciak's replacement on the station's 6 p.m. newscast soon.

Joyce has more than 35 years in the Milwaukee television market, and in that time has had one-on-one interviews with President Barack Obama, President Bill Clinton and New York Archbishop Timothy Dolan.
An investigative series she reported led to a change in Wisconsin law regarding the posting of code violations at day-care centers. She is a nine-time Chicago regional Emmy Award winner, and a documentary on bullying that she hosted went on to win national recognition with the prestigious George Foster Peabody Award and an Edward R. Murrow Award. In 2022, the Wisconsin Broadcasters Association inducted Joyce into its Hall of Fame – she is only the 12th woman out of 159 people in the Hall. And in October of that same year, the Milwaukee Press Club inducted Joyce into its Media Hall of Fame. She has been part of the Wisconsin Silver Circle since 2012, a lifetime achievement honor bestowed by the Chicago region of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.
In early 2005, Joyce left WITI-TV after some 16 years as a primary news anchor and reporter. At one point, she successfully anchored three daily newscasts, including the 10 p.m. report.
